Hird [Oct. 14th, 2004|10:24 pm]

The Hird full length album Moving On is mostly a collection of already released singles and its making me wish I didn't already have them. Because as a collection this smooths together really well, reminding me it's been too long since I pulled out Keep You Kimi and Moving On. With new tracks like Water Under My Bridges with its vocoder and harmonica and the brutal build up of Buddy Rich, this is some seriously dope downtempo.

there are some types of sounds i dont like. it has nothing to do with them being bad or good, its just not my taste. i dont like r&b style male vocals. regardless of quality, yuck. vikter duplaix, steve spacek, stevie wonder (!), not for me.
but lately i have noticed that there are some songs in this style i like a lot. i wonder if i'm getting acclimated to the sound or if the style has hit a point in its evolution where everyones using it and its becoming less raw, more palatable to wider audience?
either way, i'm really digging the quant album 'getting out' and the new greyboy, 'soul mosaic'. especially the latter, quantic and sharon jones are so funky it hurts on their 2 guest tracks.

Blockhead [Feb. 20th, 2004|10:50 pm]

[music |down to the bone - back in business]

the new blockhead on ninja tune, wow
theres a full-length called Music By Cavelight thats either out or about to be.
the already available Insomniac Olympics ep is great but get the whole thing.

dope downtempo, beautiful hip hop beats to groove to with varied horns, piano, samples, bells, a bit of excellently placed guitar.

completely replaced memphix express rising album in the regular rotation around here
damn damn good.

new stuff [Dec. 15th, 2003|05:53 am]

[music |monta - on the fly]

messengers - how true - messengers
i had to check and see if this was remix of nina simone.
warm vocal and great bass line in the broken beats.
the dubstrumental fattens up the upright bass and brings in some horn stabs and effects. essential
